Most Common Username Passwords Used for WordPress and Why They Are a Bad Idea

Most Common Username Passwords Used for WordPress

You must’ve often read or heard security experts stress upon the importance of having unique usernames and passwords for your accounts. The reason for this is because there are hundreds of thousands of wordlists available on the Internet containing millions upon millions of combinations of different usernames and passwords which are easily accessible by anyone.

Now you might be thinking as to why this is such a big deal. There’s no way that a human can possibly check each and every combination one by one to find out whether I use that particular username/password or not. Well, you are right, partially.

Most Common Username Passwords Used for WordPress

While it may be impossible for a hacker to individually check these combinations, it isn’t such a huge deal for a computer. Hackers use scripts and softwares designed for the specific purpose of carrying out such tasks. And depending on the strength of your username and password as well as the processing speed of the computer, your credentials can be found out from anywhere between a few milliseconds to a few centuries.

Such type of attacks are known as Brute Force attacks or Dictionary attacks, where hackers use wordlists to guess your login credentials. Now it might sound ineffective at first considering the massive amount of possible combinations that can be generated but it is still widely popular.

The main reason for that is, hackers can narrow down the list of possible combinations by obtaining your Personally Identifiable Information or PII. With this data in hand, they can create wordlists centering around these words and generate wordlists containing combinations of this data. It doesn’t sound a mammoth task now does it.

Every year, NordPass publishes a list of the most common usernames and passwords that were exploited and leaked by hackers on to the internet. On further analysis of this list, it is surprising to see how incredibly simple and easy passwords people are using even in the 21st century.

Here we have provided you with two lists containing the top 200 most common credentials and we highly recommend you to search through the list and check if you are using any of these credentials and change them if you are.
